/ What we build

The wall that holds
your ground.

Retaining walls are not decorative — they are structural. Whether you need to hold back a hillside, create a level building platform, or retain soil at a boundary, every wall we build starts with engineering and ends with certification.

  • Structural engineer design and certification
  • AS 4678 earth-retaining structures compliance
  • Council DA and CDC applications managed
  • Proper ag-pipe drainage behind every wall
  • Geotechnical assessment coordination
  • Boundary and easement considerations addressed

Retaining wall
systems

The right wall depends on your site conditions, retained height, soil type, and the finish you need. We build all five major systems.

01

Concrete Sleeper Walls

Galvanised steel posts with reinforced concrete sleepers. The most popular retaining system in Sydney — durable, clean-looking, and low maintenance.

02

Timber Retaining Walls

Treated pine and hardwood walls for garden beds, terracing, and low-height applications. Cost-effective with a natural appearance.

03

Sandstone Retaining Walls

Natural Sydney sandstone block walls. Heritage character, excellent longevity, and a traditional aesthetic that suits older Sydney suburbs.

04

Gabion Walls

Welded mesh cages filled with rock and stone. Excellent free-draining properties, handles ground movement, and suits steep or difficult-access sites.

05

Engineered Retaining Solutions

Reinforced concrete, cantilever, anchored, and crib wall systems for high loads, deep excavations, and sites with difficult geotechnical conditions.

/ Ground up

Every wall starts
below ground.

A retaining wall is only as good as its footing. We handle all excavation, footing construction, drainage, and backfill in-house — because the work you cannot see is the work that matters most.

Proper footings. Proper drainage. No shortcuts.

/ How we deliver

Our process

Four disciplined stages. Every milestone documented, every handoff signed.

01
Stage 01

Site Assessment

We inspect your site, assess soil conditions, measure heights and gradients, and identify any boundary or easement constraints.

02
Stage 02

Engineering & Approvals

Structural engineer design to AS 4678, geotechnical report coordination, and council DA or CDC lodgement where required.

03
Stage 03

Excavation & Construction

Machine or hand excavation, footing installation, wall construction, ag-pipe drainage, and compacted backfill — all to engineer specifications.

04
Stage 04

Certification & Handover

Engineering certification, council sign-off, and clean handover with all documentation and compliance records provided.

/ Why our clients choose us

Why our clients
choose us

Engineered to AS 4678

Every retaining wall we build is designed by a structural engineer and constructed to AS 4678. No guesswork, no under-engineering.

Licensed & Insured

Fully licensed NSW builder (318592C) with $20M public liability, workers compensation, and comprehensive insurance on every project.

Drainage Done Right

Ag-pipe drainage behind every wall, connected to stormwater or appropriate disposal. The number one reason retaining walls fail is poor drainage — we get it right.

Council Approved

We handle DA and CDC applications, engineer drawings, and certifier coordination. You deal with one contractor, not five consultants.

Retaining wall
FAQs

Common questions about retaining wall construction, costs, council approvals, and drainage in Sydney and NSW.

Q · 01 How much does a retaining wall cost in Sydney?
Retaining wall costs in Sydney vary with wall type, height, length, and site access. As a guide: timber walls start around $250–$450 per lineal metre for low heights; concrete sleeper walls typically run $400–$900 per lineal metre; engineered reinforced concrete walls range $800–$2,000+ per lineal metre depending on height and engineering requirements. We provide free, detailed, written quotes — not phone estimates.
Q · 02 Do I need council approval for a retaining wall in NSW?
In most Sydney councils, retaining walls under 600mm in height are exempt development and do not require approval. Walls over 600mm typically require either a Complying Development Certificate (CDC) or a Development Application (DA), depending on height, proximity to boundaries, and drainage impact. We handle the full approvals process as part of our service.
Q · 03 Does a retaining wall need an engineer?
Yes — any retaining wall over 600mm in height should be designed by a structural engineer to comply with AS 4678. Walls over 900mm almost always require certified engineering. Even for lower walls, engineering ensures proper footing depth, drainage design, and soil-load calculations. We coordinate with engineers on every project.
Q · 04 What is the best type of retaining wall for Sydney?
Concrete sleeper walls are the most popular choice across Sydney due to their durability, clean appearance, and relatively low maintenance. For heritage areas, sandstone is preferred. For steep sites with drainage challenges, gabion walls work well. For high-load or deep-retention situations, engineered reinforced concrete is the appropriate system. We assess your site and recommend the right wall type.
Q · 05 How long does it take to build a retaining wall?
A typical residential retaining wall in Sydney takes 1–3 weeks from excavation to completion, depending on length, height, access, and whether council approval is needed. Longer walls, difficult access, and engineered solutions can take 4–6 weeks. We provide a clear timeline with every quote.
Q · 06 What drainage is required behind a retaining wall?
Every retaining wall needs drainage to prevent hydrostatic pressure buildup, which is the most common cause of retaining wall failure. We install ag-pipe (agricultural drain) behind the wall at footing level, wrapped in geotextile fabric, connected to stormwater or an appropriate outlet. Gravel backfill and weep holes are included as per the engineer's specification.
