Exposed Aggregate Concrete: Pros, Cons and Cost Factors

23 October 2026 · 4 min read · By the METCON team

Exposed aggregate is one of the most popular concrete finishes in Sydney for driveways, paths, pool surrounds and patios. Instead of a smooth grey surface, the stones inside the concrete are revealed, giving a textured, natural look that hides wear and dirt well.

How exposed aggregate concrete is made

The concrete mix includes a selected decorative aggregate, such as river pebbles, granite or quartz, chosen for colour and size. After the concrete is placed and finished, the thin layer of cement paste on top is removed before it fully hardens, usually by washing and brushing, so the stones show through. A surface retarder may be used to control timing. Once cured, the surface is cleaned and sealed.

A related finish, honed or polished aggregate, grinds the surface flat to reveal the stones in cross-section for a smoother look.

Advantages

  • Good slip resistance compared with smooth finishes, especially when wet.
  • Hides stains, tyre marks and small cracks better than plain concrete.
  • Durable for driveways when the base and thickness are right.
  • Wide choice of stone colours to suit the house.

Disadvantages

  • Costs more than plain broom-finished concrete.
  • Rougher underfoot, which some people do not like for barefoot areas.
  • Timing-sensitive: exposing too early or too late spoils the finish, so experience matters.
  • Repairs are harder to match than plain concrete.

What drives the cost

  • Area, shape and access for the concrete truck or pump.
  • Removing an old driveway or path, and excavation.
  • Base preparation, thickness and reinforcement.
  • The aggregate selected: premium stones cost more.
  • Drainage, edging and council crossover work for driveways.
  • Sealing.

Maintenance

Most exposed aggregate is sealed to bring out the colour and resist staining. Resealing every few years, depending on traffic and exposure, keeps it looking fresh. Clean oil and leaf stains early, and avoid harsh acids that can damage the sealer and surface.

The finish is only as good as what is underneath it. We prepare the base, reinforce and pour to suit the use, then expose and seal the surface. See our concrete works service or call 0415 840 500 for a free quote.

Frequently asked questions

Is exposed aggregate concrete slippery?

Generally no. The exposed stones give better grip than smooth concrete, especially when wet, which is why it is popular around pools and on driveways.

How often should exposed aggregate be sealed?

Usually every few years, depending on traffic, sun and weather. Resealing restores colour and stain resistance.

Is exposed aggregate more expensive than plain concrete?

Yes. The decorative aggregate, extra labour and sealing add cost compared with a plain broom finish.
