Two retaining walls of the same length can have very different prices. The visible wall is only part of the job. Excavation, footings, drainage, access and approvals often make the biggest difference.
The main cost drivers
Wall type
Timber is usually the lowest upfront cost, concrete sleepers are mid-range, and sandstone, gabion, block and reinforced concrete walls generally cost more. As a rough 2026 guide, concrete sleeper walls in Sydney often fall around $400 to $700 per square metre of wall face, depending on height and engineering, with excavation, drainage, engineering and council fees potentially extra.
Height
Cost rises faster than height. Taller walls need deeper footings, heavier posts or reinforcement, more drainage and usually engineering and approval.
Length and shape
Longer walls reduce the cost per metre of setting up, while curves, corners and steps add labour.
Excavation and spoil
Digging out a slope, breaking rock and removing soil from site can be a large part of the price, especially where trucks cannot get close.
Access
Steep blocks, narrow side passages and backyards with no machine access mean smaller equipment and more handwork.
Footings and drainage
Proper footings and ag drainage, aggregate and geofabric behind the wall add cost but are what make the wall last. See retaining wall drainage.
Engineering and approvals
Walls over about 600mm, near boundaries or supporting loads may need engineering and a CDC or DA. See retaining wall basics for NSW sites.
Removing an old wall
Demolishing and disposing of a failed wall adds to the job.
How to compare quotes
- Make sure every quote is for the same wall type, height and length.
- Check excavation, spoil removal, footings and drainage are all included.
- Ask what post sizes or reinforcement are allowed for.
- Check whether engineering and council fees are included or extra.
- Be wary of quotes far below the others: something is usually missing.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a retaining wall cost in Sydney?
It depends on the wall type, height, length, access, excavation and approvals. As a rough guide, concrete sleeper walls often fall around $400 to $700 per square metre of wall face, with extras possible.
Why do retaining wall quotes vary so much?
Usually because quotes include different scopes: footings, drainage, excavation, spoil removal and engineering are often left out of cheap quotes.
What is the cheapest type of retaining wall?
Timber usually has the lowest upfront cost, but it has a shorter life than concrete sleeper, block or stone walls.
