Whether you are dealing with a sloped backyard, building a new home on uneven terrain, or stabilising land near a boundary, retaining walls are one of the most common construction projects across Sydney. But getting one built properly involves more than just stacking blocks. Here is everything you need to know before you start.
Why Retaining Walls Are Essential on Sydney Properties
Sydney's terrain is anything but flat. From the sandstone ridges of the Northern Beaches to the clay-heavy slopes of Western Sydney, retaining walls serve a critical structural purpose: they hold back soil, prevent erosion, and create usable flat areas on sloped land.
Without a properly engineered retaining wall, you risk soil movement, water damage to foundations, and even structural failure on neighbouring properties. For homeowners building extensions, granny flats, or new homes, a retaining wall is often required before any other construction can begin.
Types of Retaining Walls Used in Sydney
The right type of retaining wall depends on your site conditions, height requirements, soil type, and budget. Here are the most common types we build across Sydney:
Concrete Sleeper Retaining Walls
The most popular choice for residential properties in Sydney. Concrete sleepers are strong, durable, and available in a range of finishes that mimic timber or natural stone. They are installed between steel H-beams (also called I-beams or galvanised posts) that are concreted into the ground. Ideal for walls up to 1.5 metres, and can go higher with engineering.
- Long lifespan (50+ years)
- Low maintenance
- Available in timber-look, sandstone-look, and smooth finishes
- Suitable for most Sydney soil types
Timber Retaining Walls
A cost-effective option for low walls (under 1 metre) and garden terracing. Treated hardwood sleepers like ironbark or treated pine are commonly used. While more affordable upfront, timber walls have a shorter lifespan than concrete and may require replacement after 15 to 20 years in Sydney's climate.
Sandstone Retaining Walls
A classic Sydney choice that suits heritage properties and natural landscapes. Sandstone blocks are heavy, durable, and blend naturally with the local environment. They do require skilled installation and are typically more expensive than sleeper walls, but the visual result is hard to beat.
Gabion Retaining Walls
Wire cages filled with rock or rubble. Gabion walls are excellent for drainage-heavy sites and large-scale commercial or council projects. They are increasingly popular in modern residential designs for their industrial aesthetic.
Engineered Retaining Solutions
For walls over 600mm in height, or those near boundaries, driveways, or structures, you will likely need an engineered design. This involves a structural engineer specifying the footing depth, steel reinforcement, drainage, and wall dimensions. Reinforced concrete (poured in-situ) and crib walls are common engineered solutions for challenging sites.
Do You Need Council Approval for a Retaining Wall in NSW?
This is one of the most common questions we get. The short answer: it depends on the height and location.
General NSW Guidelines
- Under 600mm: Generally exempt from council approval (but check your local council's specific DCP)
- 600mm to 900mm: May require a Complying Development Certificate (CDC) or Development Application (DA) depending on your council
- Over 900mm: Almost always requires a DA, structural engineering, and potentially a geotechnical report
- Near a boundary: Additional setback requirements may apply regardless of height
Different councils across Sydney have different rules. For example, what is exempt in Penrith may require a DA in Ku-ring-gai. At METCON, we handle the council approval process for you, including coordinating with structural engineers and preparing all required documentation.
How Much Does a Retaining Wall Cost in Sydney?
Retaining wall costs vary widely based on the type of wall, height, length, site access, soil conditions, and whether engineering and council approvals are needed.
Approximate Cost Ranges (2026)
- Timber sleeper wall: $250 - $450 per square metre
- Concrete sleeper wall: $400 - $700 per square metre
- Sandstone block wall: $600 - $1,200 per square metre
- Engineered reinforced concrete: $800 - $1,500+ per square metre
- Gabion walls: $500 - $900 per square metre

Additional costs to budget for may include excavation, drainage (ag pipe and gravel), engineering certification, council application fees, and landscaping or backfill.
Why Drainage Is Critical
The number one reason retaining walls fail in Sydney is poor drainage. Water builds up behind the wall, increases hydrostatic pressure, and eventually pushes the wall forward or causes it to collapse.
Every retaining wall we build at METCON includes proper drainage — typically an agricultural (ag) pipe at the base of the wall, surrounded by gravel, with weep holes or a drainage outlet to allow water to escape. This is non-negotiable on any properly constructed wall.
How to Choose a Retaining Wall Builder in Sydney
Not all retaining walls are created equal, and not all builders have the experience to get them right. Here is what to look for:
- Licensed: Make sure your builder holds a current NSW contractor licence. Retaining walls over a certain value require a licensed builder.
- Insured: Public liability and workers compensation insurance should be current.
- Experienced with engineering: Your builder should be able to coordinate with structural engineers and understand engineering drawings.
- Handles council approvals: A good builder will manage the approval process on your behalf.
- Provides a detailed quote: Avoid builders who give vague estimates. You should receive an itemised quote covering materials, labour, excavation, drainage, and any engineering or council fees.
