Treated pine and hardwood retaining walls for Sydney properties. A practical, good-looking option when budget matters and the wall does not need to be a fortress.
Timber retaining walls remain one of the most cost-effective ways to manage grade changes on residential properties. The materials are readily available, construction is efficient, and the finished result blends naturally into garden and landscape settings.
We build timber walls using treated pine (H4 or H5 rated for in-ground contact) or Australian hardwood, depending on the application and the look you want. Posts are concreted into the ground, and horizontal sleepers or rails are fixed between them.
Timber works best for lower-height walls and garden terracing. For walls over 600mm in retained height, we provide engineering to AS4678 and ensure proper drainage is installed behind the wall.
Timber is not always the right choice, but when it fits the application, it delivers solid value.
We recommend timber retaining walls where the retained height is moderate, the loads are standard, and the setting suits a natural material. Timber is not the right call for every job, and we will tell you if another system makes more sense.
Timber walls have a finite lifespan compared to concrete or stone. We build them properly so you get the most out of the material.
Any timber in ground contact must be treated to at least H4. For posts set in concrete below ground, H5 is recommended. We do not use untreated or under-treated timber in retaining applications.
Ag-pipe drainage behind the wall is essential. Without it, water pressure builds behind the timber and accelerates deterioration. We install drainage on every timber wall we build.
Walls over 600mm retained height require structural engineering regardless of the material. We coordinate engineer designs that specify post size, spacing, embedment, and footing requirements.
