Natural sandstone retaining walls that suit Sydney's landscape, character areas, and heritage properties. Built properly, they outlast everything else on the site.
Sydney was built on sandstone, and it remains one of the best materials for retaining walls across the region. Natural sandstone has character that manufactured products cannot replicate. It weathers gracefully, provides natural drainage through its porous structure, and suits everything from heritage cottages to prestige contemporary homes.
We build sandstone retaining walls using locally sourced blocks in a range of finishes — from rough-cut natural face to sawn and dressed. The construction method depends on the wall height, the site, and the look you are after.
For walls over 600mm retained height, we provide full structural engineering to AS4678. Heritage-listed properties may require specific approval processes, and we handle those from start to finish.
We use three primary sandstone construction methods depending on height, structural requirements, and design intent.
Blocks are carefully placed without mortar, relying on weight and interlocking geometry for stability. Excellent natural drainage. Best for lower walls and garden features where a rustic, traditional appearance is desired.
Blocks are set with mortar joints for a more formal finish and greater structural capacity. Required for taller walls and where engineering specifications demand it. Weep holes are included for drainage.
Machine-cut sandstone blocks provide uniform dimensions and clean lines. Suits contemporary designs where a precise, architectural finish is needed while retaining the natural stone character.
Sandstone is a premium material, and we use it where its qualities are best suited to the site and the brief.
